The Covenanters & the British Civil Wars

This class looks at the period of the Covenanting movement in Scotland, 1637-51, when it emerged as a movement of opposition and took over the apparatus of state power in Scotland, before being ultimately conquered by Oliver Cromwell in 1651. Themes covered include how the Covenanters ran the country, intervention in England and Ireland as part of the British and Irish Wars, civil war in Scotland, and the drive for a godly society including witch-hunting. Special consideration is given to Ayrshire as Ayrshire was one of the main areas of Covenanting support in Scotland.
No prior knowledge is expected and the tutor will provide source material from the period for discussion in the class.
