We will explore the theme of reputation in Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, Shakespeare's Henry V and 3 modern short stories Lewis Grassic Gibbon, 'Smeddum'; W. Somerset Maughan, 'The Colonel's Lady'; Zora Neale Hurston, 'Black Death'. These stories all feature a strong woman who quietly but effectively builds or defends reputation by challenging social stereotypes.
